Spend twenty dollars on a desk accessory and you're buying a shape. Spend eighty and you're buying a material — the shape is nearly identical across the category, and what separates one object from another is what it's made of and how it was finished.
So it's worth knowing what each material is actually like after a year on a desk, rather than what it looks like in a photograph.
Black walnut
The one people picture when they say "wood desk accessory." Chocolate to purple-brown, with a straight, close grain and occasional dramatic figure where the tree branched.
Living with it: Walnut is the forgiving one. Its darkness and its grain pattern hide the small marks a desk accumulates — a coffee ring, a pen score, the scuff where a laptop corner lands every day. It's a medium-density hardwood, so it feels substantial without being unmanageable.
The thing nobody tells you: Walnut lightens with sun exposure. Most woods darken; walnut moves the other way, mellowing from deep brown toward a warmer amber over a few years. If your desk sits by a window, expect the piece to change. Most people end up preferring the aged color.
Best for: Anything you look at all day — risers, wrist rests, trays, drawers.
Natural and white oak
Pale straw to light honey, with an open, pronounced grain and visible medullary rays — the flecks and ribbons that catch light across the board.
Living with it: Oak brightens a room in a way walnut can't. In a small space, or a room with a north-facing window, a light oak riser can be the difference between a desk that feels closed in and one that feels open. It's harder than walnut and very stable.
The trade-off: Open grain means the pores are visible and slightly textured. It's beautiful, and it also means an oak surface will hold onto dust and the occasional dark mark more visibly than walnut will. Light color is less forgiving of stains.
Best for: Bright, minimal, Scandinavian-leaning setups; anywhere you want the accessory to recede rather than anchor.
Bamboo
Technically not wood at all — bamboo is a grass, harvested in three to five years rather than the forty to sixty a hardwood needs. It's milled into strips and laminated, which is why the grain reads as fine, regular pinstripes rather than the wandering figure of a tree.
Living with it: Denser and harder than most hardwoods, genuinely resistant to dents, and dimensionally very stable in humid rooms. Carbonized bamboo — heat-treated to a darker caramel — trades a little hardness for a warmer color.
The honest assessment: Bamboo is the best value in the category and the least characterful. Because it's laminated from uniform strips, every piece looks like every other piece. If you want an object with individual character, this isn't it. If you want hard-wearing, sustainable, and consistent, it's the smart choice.
Best for: High-contact surfaces — monitor risers, device stands, anything that takes daily abuse.
Machined aluminum
Cut or extruded from solid billet, then anodized. Silver or space gray, cool to the touch, dimensionally precise in a way wood can never be.
Living with it: Aluminum's real advantage is thermal. It pulls heat away from whatever sits on it, which is why serious laptop stands are aluminum and not wood — a machine that runs hot on a desk runs meaningfully cooler on an aluminum frame. The anodized surface is hard and doesn't mark easily.
The trade-off: It reads as equipment, not furniture. Aluminum sits comfortably next to a laptop and awkwardly next to walnut unless the design deliberately bridges the two.
Best for: Laptop stands, monitor arms, anything with a moving joint that needs to hold tolerance.
Steel
Where aluminum buys precision, steel buys mass. A steel riser or a steel-legged shelf doesn't move when you knock it, and that immovability is the entire point.
Living with it: Powder-coated matte black is the standard finish and it wears extremely well. Steel pairs unusually well with wood — the contrast of a warm walnut shelf on cold black steel is the most reliable two-material combination in workspace design.
Best for: Structures that need to stay put under load; anything holding a heavy display.
Felt and vegan leather
The soft layer. Both do the same job — put a quiet, slightly compliant surface between hard objects and a hard desk — and they do it very differently.
Merino-feel felt is warm, matte, sound-absorbing, and grippy. It deadens the clatter of a mechanical keyboard noticeably. It also holds dust and shows a spill.
Vegan leather is smooth, wipes clean instantly, and gives a mouse a fast, consistent surface. It's the practical choice if you eat at your desk or work with anything that can spill.
The two-material rule
If you take one thing from this: pick one wood and one metal, and stay there.
Walnut and black steel. Oak and brushed aluminum. Bamboo and matte black. Two materials, repeated across every object on the desk, produces a setup that looks designed. Four materials — walnut here, oak there, a silver stand, a brass pen cup — produces a setup that looks accumulated, no matter how good each individual piece is.
Care, briefly
- Oiled wood (walnut, oak): wipe with a barely damp cloth. Re-oil with a food-safe finishing oil once or twice a year, or when the surface stops beading water. Never leave standing liquid on it.
- Bamboo: the same, but it's more tolerant of humidity and needs oiling less often.
- Anodized aluminum: damp cloth, dry immediately. Avoid anything abrasive — the anodized layer is thin and doesn't come back.
- Powder-coated steel: practically maintenance-free. Damp cloth.
- Felt: lint roller for dust, spot-clean with a little water and let it dry flat.
- Vegan leather: damp cloth. Keep it out of direct, prolonged sun.
