Most people can name the chair they sit in. Almost nobody can tell you how high their monitor is. That asymmetry is strange, because the screen decides where your head goes, and your head decides what the rest of your spine does for the next eight hours.
A human head weighs roughly as much as a bowling ball. Held upright and balanced, your neck barely notices it. Tipped forward fifteen or twenty degrees to read a screen that sits too low, the muscles at the back of your neck and across the top of your shoulders have to hold that weight in tension — not for a moment, but continuously, all day, every day.
You don't feel the angle. You feel the result: a tight band across the shoulders around 3 p.m., a headache that starts behind the eyes, an ache at the base of the skull that you blame on stress.
Where the top of your screen should actually sit
The widely accepted ergonomic guidance is simple enough to check in ten seconds:
- The top edge of the screen at or just below eye level. When you look straight ahead with a neutral neck, your gaze should land on the upper third of the display — not the middle, and definitely not the bottom.
- About an arm's length away. Sit back, extend your arm, and your fingertips should roughly graze the glass. Larger displays want a little more distance.
- Tilted back ten to twenty degrees. The screen should face your face, not the ceiling. A slight backward tilt keeps the whole surface at a consistent viewing distance.
- Directly in front of you. A monitor parked off to one side asks your neck to rotate and hold that rotation. If you run dual displays, center the one you actually work in.
Nearly every desk fails the first test. Standard desk height and standard monitor stands were not designed as a system; they were designed independently, and the gap between them is usually four to six inches of missing height.
Laptops are the worst offender, by design
A laptop is a compromise machine. The screen is welded to the keyboard, so the two can never both be correct. Put the keyboard where your hands want it and the screen is far too low. Raise the screen to eye level and you're typing at chest height.
There is no posture fix for a bare laptop on a desk. There is only a hardware fix: lift the screen, then add a separate keyboard and mouse at the height your elbows want. That single change — a stand plus an external keyboard — does more for a laptop-based setup than any other purchase at any price.
The dividend nobody mentions: desk space
Raising a monitor doesn't just fix your neck. It creates an entire second surface underneath it.
The footprint under a riser is prime real estate: it's the only spot on the desk that is both within arm's reach and completely out of your sight line. A keyboard slides under it at the end of the day. A notebook, a tablet, a pair of headphones — all of it disappears from the visual field without leaving the desk.
That's the quiet reason risers change how a desk feels. You didn't add storage. You stopped looking at the things you already owned.
Three ways to get the height, and how to choose
A fixed riser
A solid platform that sits on the desk and raises everything on it by a set amount. It's the most stable option, the most affordable, and the one that gives you the storage shelf underneath. Choose a riser when your monitor stays in one place, you want the space beneath it, and you like the look of wood or steel on a desk. Check two numbers before you buy: the lift height (most desks need three to five inches) and the width, so your keyboard actually fits underneath.
A gas-spring monitor arm
A clamp-mounted arm that floats the display and lets you move it freely — height, depth, tilt, rotation. Choose an arm when you share a desk, switch between sitting and standing, or want the desktop completely clear beneath the screen. The trade-off: you lose the shelf, you need a desk edge the clamp can grip, and you should confirm your monitor's VESA pattern and weight before ordering.
A laptop stand
An angled or adjustable frame that lifts the laptop itself. Choose a stand when the laptop is your machine and you're adding an external keyboard. Aluminum stands double as heat sinks, which matters more than people expect during long calls or heavy builds.
A ten-minute setup check
- Sit the way you actually sit — feet flat, back against the chair, no performance posture.
- Close your eyes, relax your neck, then open them looking straight ahead. Note where your gaze lands on the screen.
- If it lands below the top third, you need height. Measure the gap in inches.
- Check your elbows: they should be at roughly ninety degrees with your forearms parallel to the floor. If raising the screen breaks this, your keyboard needs to come down or your chair needs to come up.
- Add the height. Sit back down. Repeat step two.
You'll know it's right when your first hour feels unremarkable and your fourth hour feels the same as your first.
